Understanding Mental Health with Core Assist

Mental health encompasses a diverse range of conditions that can affect individuals in various ways. Some conditions are mild and may have minimal impact on daily life, while others can be more severe and require ongoing support. Mental health challenges include widely recognized conditions like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and phobias, as well as less commonly known conditions such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, dissociative identity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Tourette’s syndrome, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

At Core Assist, we’re here to provide compassionate and expert support for individuals managing mental health conditions. Our dedicated NDIS Mental Health Support workers collaborate with you to understand your personal goals and aspirations, developing a customised support plan that prioritises your well-being. Together, we aim to empower you toward a more fulfilling, independent quality of life.

Mental Health Information

Mental health conditions manifest in unique ways, each with its own set of symptoms. While some symptoms are visible, many challenges are internal and may not be apparent to others. Certain conditions share overlapping symptoms, which can blur distinctions between diagnoses. Despite advancements in understanding, mental health is still complex and, in many cases, not fully understood. Some mental health conditions are triggered by trauma or life experiences, while others may develop alongside unrelated illnesses or have genetic links. Some conditions appear without any specific cause.

Science has also found that mental health conditions may have biochemical components, opening up pathways for treatment. Though we may not fully understand the intricate role of brain chemistry, modern medicine continues to identify specific biochemical targets to improve overall well-being and daily functioning.

Treatment for mental health conditions often combines medication with personalised therapies, helping individuals manage symptoms and work toward a balanced, fulfilling life. At Core Assist, we are here to support you in your journey, ensuring that your treatment plan is tailored to your needs and goals.

Is Mental Health Covered by the NDIS?

If you live with a long-term disability caused by a mental health condition, also known as a psychosocial disability (PSD), you may be eligible for support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). This funding can provide essential assistance to help you access the tailored support services you need.

In Australia, approximately 3 million people experience mild to moderate mental health challenges, while about 700,000 individuals live with severe, persistent mental health conditions that often require complex, ongoing support. Psychosocial disabilities can significantly impact daily life, but with the right support, individuals can work toward greater independence and improved well-being.

At Core Assist, we’re here to guide you through every step of the NDIS assessment process to see if you qualify for mental health support funding. Our knowledgeable team can assist with documentation and help streamline the application process. To become an NDIS participant, you’ll need to provide evidence of how your mental health condition affects your daily life—no specific diagnosis is required. Our Mental Health Support Specialists are here to assist, ensuring your support plan is focused on what matters most to you.

What Can the NDIS Fund for Mental Health Support?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is designed to enhance access to high-quality, personalised support for people with disabilities, including those with mental health conditions. The goal is to empower individuals, foster independence, and promote social and economic participation.

For those managing a psychosocial disability, “recovery” doesn’t mean a complete “cure.” Instead, it’s a journey toward achieving the highest possible level of personal, social, and emotional well-being.

Through the NDIS, individuals with mental health conditions can access a range of essential services, such as personal care, community engagement, nutritional guidance, skill development, transport, household assistance, and behavioural support. Most NDIS participants also receive funding for Plan Management and Support Coordination, ensuring that they can effectively manage their plan and access the services they need. The amount and type of funding available are tailored based on the individual’s unique needs and disability severity.

It’s important to note that NDIS funding for mental health primarily supports daily living needs. While it does not cover clinical treatments, therapies, or specific medical programs, it can include support for transportation to appointments and assistance during clinical sessions.

Eligibility for NDIS Mental Health Support

To access NDIS funding, participants must meet certain age, residency, and disability criteria. Evidence demonstrating how a mental health condition impacts daily living is also required; however, a formal diagnosis is not necessary.

At Core Assist, we work with you as a trusted NDIS mental health service provider, helping you identify your priorities and develop a support plan tailored to your needs. Our aim is to help you lead a fulfilling, independent life through accessible, meaningful support.
